According to the Bible, God originally created everything good, but we are now living in a fallen world and evil exists. But where did evil come then come from? There is a story in the Bible that says that long ago there was a rebellion in heaven among the angels. The angel who was in charge of music rebelled and God was so angry He cast him down to the earth, together with one-third of the angels.
“By the abundance of your trading, You became filled with violence within, and you sinned; Therefore I cast you as a profane thing. Out of the mountain of God; And I destroyed you, O covering cherub, From the midst of the fiery stones. (Ezekiel 28:16 NKJV). See also Revelation 12:4, 12:9, Isaiah 14:12.
These invisible beings were then living on the earth, together with man. They enticed man, tempted him and were the cause of the fall of Adam and Eve. Many people associate these fallen angels with what we today call demons.
In the New Testament Paul mentions that there are different kinds of demons:
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Ephesians 6:12 KJV.
There are different interpretations as to who these entities are. Paul’s description is often seen as a description of the different levels of demons. In heaven the angels have a hierarchy, such as archangels, cherubim, and seraphim. When one third of the angels fell on earth they came from every kind of angels and this could explain why we have different types of demons. In this case Satan himself is a fallen cherub, and the principalities would be fallen seraphim. I have also read that some people think that principalities, and powers are the original fallen angels, while the lower demons came later.
Some people think that the actual fallen angels cannot possess humans, only smaller demons can. I disagree. Because we experienced a human being who was most likely possessed by a principality (see Awestruck by Glory).
Fallen angels and demons are spirits that we don’t see, that do not have bodies and look for human bodies to influence or possess. They have a long memory, because spirits do not die as we do. They go into people, from generation to generation, searching for anyone one they can live in, often through families. Demons remember the past, but they do not know the future. They sometimes pretend to know your future, by knowing all the things around you. They remember when Jesus conquered them at the cross, but when it happened they did not know He would rise again and that they would be defeated forever!
